While the industry waits for Windows 2000, Linux backers Monday
detailed upcoming futures for their own operating system kernel.
With the Linux 2.4 kernel set for release by year's end, companies
such as Caldera Systems Inc., Red Hat Inc. and TurboLinux are prepping
major new distributions for the release during the second quarter of
2000, executives said at a Comdex press conference here.
The Linux 2.4 kernel, under the guidance of Linus Torvalds, will
feature improved support for SMP, laptops and PCMCIA cards, and faster
performance for file-system services, said several Linux backers. For
example, the updated kernel will offer improved caching for file
look-up and disk caching.
Attendees at Monday's conference, however, said the release time frame
is not set in stone. "It's possible Linus [Torvalds] will decide it's
not ready for prime time," said Daniel Quinlan, a colleague of
Torvalds who also works as an engineer at Santa Clara, Calif.-based
Transmeta Corp.
The next-generation Linux 3.0 kernel will offer improved support for
smaller devices such as the PalmPilot and other PDA devices and, on
the other extreme, better support for large-scale devices and systems
such as Intel Corp.'s Xeon systems, Quinlan said.
Sources at the show noted that Torvalds, the creator and director of
the Linux kernel, is expected to discuss Linux futures and disclose
product plans for Transmeta, a microprocessor start-up that has yet to
ship product, at his Comdex keynote later Monday.
Meanwhile, Microsoft Corp. remained conspicuously silent about the
release of its final beta of Windows 2000, Release Candidate 3.
After a press conference with Unisys Corp. and EMC Corp., Microsoft
President Steve Ballmer said the Windows 2000 upgrade would be
available in February, but told CRN during a brief interview that he
did not know the status of the release of RC3, which executives
promised for delivery in mid-November.
During the press conference, Unisys revealed plans to ship a highly
scalable system -- the ES 7000 -- running Windows 2000 Advanced server
in the first quarter of 2000. The system, dubbed the data center of
the next millennium, runs a 9-terabyte SQL Server 7.0 database,
conducts 4,000 transactions per second and handles more than 3 billion
Web hits per day. The system is slated to cost between 20 percent and
33 percent of the cost of a comparable Unix system, said Lawrence
Weinbach, Unisys chairman and chief executive.
